Members of the Rotary Club of Rukungiri Central have been urged to step up efforts in recruiting new members, including those without formal education, to grow the club’s numbers and strengthen its community impact.

The call was made on 30th July 2025 by Ms. Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, the District Governor of Rotary International District 9214, during her official visit to Rukungiri Inn in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

Ms. Kawooya noted that the number of active members remains low compared to the years of the club’s existence, a challenge that limits the scope of their humanitarian projects. She emphasized the importance of inclusive recruitment, encouraging the club to look beyond professionals and civil servants, and to consider all individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to the Rotary mission.

Rotary International champions several global causes including disease prevention and treatment, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, community economic development, environmental conservation, and peacebuilding.

Rotary Club of Rukungiri Central President, Sophia Turyabagyenyi, reaffirmed the club’s commitment to attracting new members and implementing impactful projects that uplift the community and raise the club’s profile.

During the same event, Sister Prisca Mwesigwa, a retired medical worker, showcased a club initiative of producing reusable sanitary pads for adolescent school girls. She revealed that an assessment had shown 18% of school dropouts were linked to menstrual hygiene challenges. She appealed for support from the District Governor to expand the initiative and help address early school dropouts and teenage marriages.

Canon Twinomujuni Wyclif Makky, a retired educationist, applauded the Governor’s visit, saying it reinvigorated the club’s spirit in member recruitment and performance of service activities.
