The deteriorating state of the Omukyiragyiro–Nshungyezi–Kihengano–Kikoni farm road in Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, has left residents stranded, especially in regard to transportation.
It is reported that the road has been in a sorry state for a long time, and although the sub-county is in charge, it has not been in a position to work on it. However, the road has now been taken up by the district since the funds to rehabilitate it were received from the central government.
The Chairperson LC1 of Nyamabare Cell, Mr. Bernard Kasiramu, speaking to our reporter, highlighted that the road is a great challenge to users, especially farmers transporting their produce to the market.
He further noted that school-going children are also affected, and the section heading to Kihengamo has become impassable due to heavy rains that have created deep water-filled potholes.
The Rubanga Parish Woman Councillor, Ms. Phionah Beinomugisha, also expressed her frustration, saying the road is in a very poor state, especially during this rainy season, and urgently needs rehabilitation to ease the transportation of farm produce.
She added that transport fares have risen due to the poor condition of the road and called upon the government to intervene to foster development.
The Chairperson LC3 of Buyanja Sub-county, Mr. Agaba Emmy Rubondo, in an exclusive interview with our reporter, expressed concern over the hardships faced by residents of the three parishes that use this road: Rubanga North, Rwakyirungura, and Rubanga South.
He cited the challenge of the district having only one grader, which has left many roads unattended. He appealed to the government to provide at least one tractor per sub-county to ease road maintenance. However, he confirmed that funds for this road are already on the account and that works will commence soon.
Meanwhile, the Rukungiri District Engineer, Mr. Julius Bagyira, confirmed to our reporter that funds are already available to work on the road. He added that requisitions have been submitted to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for approval, and once fuel is secured, work will begin immediately.
