Residents of Butinde and Kagyeyo Cells in Nyeibingo Parish, Kebisoni Sub County, Rukungiri District, have come together in a communal effort to rehabilitate Kagyeyo Bridge, ensuring a reliable transport network for their community.

Kagyeyo Bridge, which sits at the boundary of Butinde and Kagyeyo Cells along the Biguri-Butinde-Omuribiri road, is managed by the Sub County. The restoration effort was spearheaded by residents, determined to maintain essential infrastructure despite challenges.

Amon Bagamuhunda, the communal work organizer, commended the contributions of Tashobya Sam, Arthur Kitorobo, and Elias Besiga, who provided construction materials for the project. He emphasized the importance of sustaining roads and bridges through collective action.

“This kind of community spirit is what keeps our roads passable. If we continue working together, we can overcome any challenge,” Bagamuhunda stated.

However, some residents expressed frustration over the lack of leadership in organizing such initiatives. Keleth Rwamari, a resident of Kagyeyo Cell, criticized local leaders for failing to implement communal work programs, leading to deteriorating roads.

“It is disappointing that we, the residents, have to take matters into our own hands while our leaders remain inactive,” Rwamari lamented.

Julius Bagamuhunda, from Butinde Cell, praised the residents for embracing communal work but urged the government to intervene by providing culverts to reinforce bridges.

“We can do our part, but without proper culverts, our efforts won’t be sustainable,” he noted.

Echoing this concern, Johnson Nasasira Kapapari of Butinde Cell called on the public to take responsibility for preserving their roads and bridges.

“We must protect our infrastructure with the same energy we put into repairing it. Let’s guard against actions that lead to destruction,” he urged.

The rehabilitation of Kagyeyo Bridge highlights the resilience and determination of the community to sustain their transport network, even in the face of official inaction.
