Residents of Rwabikondo Cell in Nyakabungo Town Council, Kanungu District, are raising concerns over severe water scarcity in their area.

The district leadership had initiated the construction of a water tank in Katonga Parish, but the project remains incomplete. Residents claim that the water source is too far from Rwabikondo Cell, limiting its accessibility.

Speaking to our reporter, LC1 Chairperson of Rwabikondo Cell, Kamuhangyire John, stated that there is no gravity water supply in the area, forcing residents to rely on river water, which poses serious health risks. He highlighted the prevalence of waterborne diseases due to the consumption of contaminated water and called upon the government to intervene and provide clean water services.

Nalicensiyo Nahabwe, a resident of Rwabikondo Cell, echoed similar concerns, expressing frustration over the incomplete project in Katonga Parish. He explained that despite having a potential water source, the contractor failed to complete the work, leading to leakages that have significantly reduced water supply to the community. He added that local councilors attribute the delay to insufficient funds.

Another resident, Ninsiya Tugumisiriza, emphasized that water scarcity is a major challenge in their area. She noted that the only available borehole is several miles away, making access to clean water difficult. As a result, residents rely on rainwater, which is often unclean, exposing them to waterborne diseases.

However, the Mayor of Nyakabungo Town Council, Fuligensi Kazanenda, acknowledged the issue and assured residents that a solution is underway. He confirmed that the town council has partnered with Umbrella Uganda to implement a gravity flow water scheme, which is expected to be completed in the shortest time possible.
