Residents of Ndere Ruhinda Sub-county in Rukungiri District have expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating road network in their area.
Farmers, in particular, are suffering financial losses due to high transport costs stemming from the poor condition of the roads. One such road is the 20-kilometer stretch from Kashenyi to Mularo and Lubuuba, which is reported to be in very bad shape.
Jovulet Nsiime, the Mothers’ Union leader at Ndere Church of Uganda, highlighted that many community roads are in a deplorable state, which severely impacts the transportation of agricultural produce to markets. She noted that produce trucks are forced to carry only half of their capacity to navigate the rough roads, leading to increased costs for transporting goods.
Consequently, residents are compelled to raise the prices of their products to cover these high transport expenses. Nsiime criticized district authorities for neglecting the area, though she acknowledged their efforts in repairing the Rubuuba bridge on the same road. She argued that fixing only the bridge while leaving the road in poor condition is not effective and called on leaders to prioritize road repairs.
Deus Semakula, Chairperson LC2 of Ndere Parish, confirmed that while the Kashenyi-Mularo-Lubuuba road is in poor condition, other services in the area are functioning well. He praised the district for addressing the Lubuuba bridge issue, which had been a major problem. Semakula also mentioned that the issue of the poor road has been forwarded to the district authorities, who have promised to address it soon.
