Parents and local leaders in Nyakagyeme Sub-County, Rukungiri District, have expressed frustration over what they see as prolonged neglect of Kahoko Primary School by authorities.

Byamukama Ambrose, a concerned parent, described the deteriorating state of the school buildings as a major hazard, especially during the rainy season. “The classrooms are in such poor condition that we fear for our children’s safety. Their learning experience is greatly hindered,” he said.

Venansi Bakazagwa, the headteacher of Kahoko Primary School, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that the dire state of the buildings puts everyone at risk. “The structures are on the verge of collapse, and the shortage of adequate toilet facilities adds to the challenges we face daily,” Bakazagwa noted.

The headteacher called on the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to urgently address the infrastructure crisis to ensure the safety of both students and teachers.

Barugahare Johnson, the area councilor for Kahoko Parish and vice chairman of Nyakagyeme Sub-County, lamented that local leaders have raised these issues repeatedly but received little to no action. “We have highlighted the plight of this school on several occasions, yet our appeals seem to fall on deaf ears,” Barugahare stated.

He criticized leaders for failing to prioritize education, despite its critical role in community development. “Neglecting schools like Kahoko Primary is a disservice to the future of our children and the growth of this area. Immediate intervention is needed to save this institution from collapse,” he added.

The struggling school is situated in Rujumbura County, where the area Member of Parliament is Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katuguugu, who also serves as Uganda’s Security Minister. Parents and local leaders are urging him, alongside other government officials, to take swift action to address the longstanding concerns.

As the rainy season continues, the school community remains anxious, hoping that their calls for help will finally be heard and that meaningful steps will be taken to restore Kahoko Primary School to a safe and conducive learning environment.
