Primary Seven candidates in Rukungiri District have expressed concern over the ongoing peaceful sit-down strike by teachers, saying it risks affecting their performance in the forthcoming Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

The candidates are expected to sit for their PLE on 3rd and 4th November 2025, with a total of 1,172 registered from Rukungiri Municipality.

Elizabeth Kukundakwe, John Viani Nahurira, and Josephine Nagasha from Nyakibale Lower Primary School voiced their fears over the limited time remaining for preparation and the absence of teachers to guide them in revision.

Bella Shizera Nankunda and Patricia Kyohairwe from Nyabihinga Primary School stressed that parts of the curriculum remain incomplete, and they have not had adequate time for revision, which they say is crucial for achieving quality results.

Peter Atwebembire, the Head Teacher of Nyabihinga Primary School, acknowledged his presence at school alongside his deputy, caring for the learners and following guidance from the education authorities.

Hillary Agaba, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Rukungiri, revealed that they held a morning meeting with school inspectors who were tasked to register teachers still active at school and forward recommendations.

Lovence Biriho, the UNATU Chairperson for Rukungiri District, maintained that there is little hope of teachers returning to class soon, recalling unfulfilled promises made by the President three years ago regarding salary increments. She said teachers will remain on strike until they receive fresh guidance from the UNATU Secretary General.
