As Christians begin the observance of Lent, two prominent Catholic priests have urged the faithful to embrace prayer, reconciliation, and charity in preparation for Easter.

Rev. Fr. Izidoro Bakashobeza, priest of Christ the King Parish in Rukungiri, emphasized the importance of deep spiritual reflection during the Ash Wednesday Mass. Speaking to congregants, he called on Christians to prepare themselves for the season of Lent by intensifying prayer, seeking forgiveness, and strengthening their faith in Christ. He explained that Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and reconciliation, which allows Christians to reflect on the suffering of Christ and renew their commitment to spiritual growth. This period, he said, culminates in the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday, symbolizing redemption for believers.

Fr. Bakashobeza further elaborated that Lent is not only about abstaining from food, but also about reconnecting with God through regular prayer, attending Mass, and engaging in almsgiving. He encouraged parents to resolve conflicts peacefully through dialogue and urged all Christians to be instruments of peace and reconciliation within their families. Reflecting on the symbolism of the ashes placed on foreheads during the service, he reminded the congregation that “man is dust, and unto dust, shall return.”

In his message, Fr. Bakashobeza also urged Christians to practice humility in their almsgiving. He stressed that acts of charity should be done quietly, without seeking public recognition, as God desires humility in both giving and prayer.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Conrad Atuhaire, priest of Nyakibale Catholic Parish in the neighboring Kabale Diocese, echoed similar calls during his Ash Wednesday homily. Father Atuhaire, who presided over the first Ash Wednesday Mass at Nyakibale Parish, urged Christians to use the Lenten period wisely and avoid misusing it through misconduct. He highlighted that the 40-day period reflects the time Jesus Christ spent in the desert, fasting and praying, and Christians should follow His example by prioritizing prayer and charity work.

Fr. Atuhaire warned against publicizing personal fasting efforts, noting that such actions detract from the true purpose of the season. He stressed that fasting should be done in private, as should prayers, while charity work should be at the forefront of the Christian mission during Lent.

Musimenta S. Gaetano, a member of the Nyakibale Parish, also added her voice, emphasizing the importance of repentance, devotion to prayer, and engaging in charitable acts as a way to receive God’s blessings during the season of Lent.

Both priests’ messages have called on Christians in Rukungiri and surrounding areas to dedicate themselves to reflection, prayer, and charitable acts as they prepare for the celebration of Easter.
