On Wednesday, Ms. Mary Karooro Okurut, the presidential advisor on public relations, urged leaders of the Mother’s Union from West Ankole Diocese to embrace crafts for local and international business endeavors. Addressing 150 Mother’s Union leaders from Keinamo Church of Uganda in West Ankole Diocese during a one-day training at the Ntambiko Crafts Centre in Bushenyi Ishaka municipality, Ms. Karooro emphasized the importance of women involving themselves in crafts to augment household income in Bushenyi District.

Ms. Karooro highlighted the significance of setting high standards in a global village and emphasized the potential of crafts to attract both domestic and foreign markets, citing the Ntambiko Crafts Centre as an example of excellence in the Western region. She encouraged the exploration of new ventures such as utilizing banana fibers for crafting products, emphasizing the importance of diversifying income sources.

Echoing Ms. Karooro’s sentiments, Ms. Annet Byamugisha, a Mother’s Union leader, expressed optimism that the acquired skills would empower women to reduce dependency on family heads and improve household incomes. She emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge gained for the benefit of their families and communities.

Ms. Shifrah Namuwonge, a businesswoman and facilitator, highlighted the vast market potential for crafted products both locally and internationally, encouraging more women to join the industry to address financial challenges.

Rev. Yorokamu Tayebwa of Keinamo Church of Uganda expressed gratitude for the training, noting its potential to alleviate financial burdens on women involved in village savings groups.

Under the leadership of Ms. Mary Karooro, the Okurut Foundation, established in 2017, has been instrumental in promoting sustainable development and self-reliance in the community. Through initiatives like this training, women are equipped with valuable skills and empowered to pursue economic opportunities beyond their localities.
