Residents in Rukungiri district have raised concerns over the poor state of the Bikurungu–Rwenshama road, which they say is jeopardizing tourism in the district.

Residents say this road is vital for tourism in Rukungiri, as most tourists use it to access Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenshama fish landing site. They are urging authorities to address the issue.

Twesigomwe Laban, a local tourist, told our reporter that the state of the road is currently deplorable, with many potholes making movement to these tourist sites difficult.

He said authorities in Rukungiri should intervene and work on the road, given its importance.

Onyete Bingana, the Rukungiri District Tourism Officer, confirmed the issue, noting that the road is indeed in poor condition and emphasizing the need for government intervention.

He also expressed concern over residents who interfere with tourism sites such as the national park, rivers, and lakes like Lake Kimbugu.

He highlighted some developments made at tourism sites, including the construction of accommodation and a canteen at Mineera Hot Spring, and installation of a light at Ihimbo Hot Spring in Bwambara.

Atwiine Shillah, another resident, said tourism in Rukungiri is thriving but criticized leaders for failing to do whatever it takes to improve tourism roads.
