As the New Year approaches, the Kigezi Police have called on residents to celebrate responsibly to ensure a peaceful end to the festive season.
ASP Maate Elly, the Police Public Relations Officer for Kigezi, emphasized the need for conscious celebrations, highlighting key safety measures. Event organizers and participants in overnight prayers are advised to ensure proper security arrangements and to attend events in numbers and on time.
Parents are urged not to leave children or homes unattended, as this increases the risk of burglary and other criminal incidents. Residents are also warned against burning Christmas trees, tyres, or other materials on roads, as these pose fire hazards and inconvenience road users.
Fireworks should only be used with permission from the Inspector General of Police, and security personnel are strictly prohibited from misusing firearms for celebratory purposes. ASP Maate also cautioned against drunk driving and reckless riding, noting the serious risks to both the driver and other road users.
“Any person involved in criminal activities during the festive season risks arrest and prosecution. Security deployments are in place to ensure that the celebrations are peaceful,” ASP Maate said.
He concluded by wishing the public a Happy New Year.
