Territorial police in Rukungiri District have launched a serious manhunt for unknown suspect(s) who allegedly broke into Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakishenyi Sub-county and stole a police firearm — an SMG rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at around 8:30 PM. According to preliminary investigations, the firearm belonged to No. 83982 PC Muyambi Pius, who had reported for duty at 6:00 AM and left the rifle secured in his bedroom adjacent to the station counter.
At around 8:00 PM, PC Muyambi reportedly went for supper at a nearby hotel approximately 60 meters from the post, leaving the gun behind. Upon returning, he discovered his room had been broken into and the firearm stolen. He immediately alerted nearby residents who responded to the scene and confirmed the break-in.
The Officer in Charge of the post, who had earlier checked out for medical reasons, was also informed. A team from Rukungiri Police Station, including a K-9 unit, visited the crime scene to commence investigations, but no positive leads were obtained.
PC Muyambi Pius has since been taken into custody to assist with investigations.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain vigilant.
“We call upon members of the public to be security conscious. Should anyone see any suspicious objects or persons, they are advised to immediately report to local leaders or relevant authorities so that the suspects can be apprehended and brought to justice,” said ASP Maate.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
