Police have launched an investigation into a suspected suicide incident in Gakware Village, Sooko Parish, Muramba Sub County, where a 56-year-old man was found dead on Monday afternoon. The deceased, identified as Kabonye Girigori, a peasant and resident of Gakware Village, was discovered hanging from a tree at around 12:30 PM by a local passerby, Nyirantungane, who raised an alarm.
Residents rushed to the scene and cut the rope in an attempt to rescue Girigori, but sadly, he had already succumbed. Authorities were quickly alerted, and officers from the Kisoro Police Station arrived to document the scene and examine the body. According to police sources, the deceased had a history of suicide attempts and was living alone at the time of the incident. Locals also reported that he was a habitual drunkard.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and noted that an inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to Girigori’s death. “We are continuing our investigations to establish whether there were any external factors that contributed to this tragic event,” Maate said.
This incident has left the community in shock as they await further updates from the ongoing police inquiry.
