Police in Bushenyi have started investigations into a case where unknown people have set fire to another boys’ dormitory at Nyakabanga Senior Secondary School.

The fire, which began at around 5:30 AM on November 10, 2024, destroyed property worth millions of shillings.

Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident at Nyakabanga Senior Secondary School in Nyakabanga Cell A, Bujenjye Parish, Kyabugimbi Sub-county, Bushenyi District.

It is alleged that on November 10, 2024, an unknown person set fire to Block E of the boys’ dormitory, which housed 100 students from different classes. The students were attending morning prep at the time.

Bonny Barinyenka, 76, the school headteacher and a resident of Nyakabanga B LC1, Bujenjye Parish, Kyabugimbi Sub-county, reported the incident to Kyabugimbi Police Station. He stated that the fire destroyed property, including books, suitcases, and other personal items.

According to Barinyenka, the fire began while students were at prep, which starts at 4:00 AM, and appeared to have started from two points: one in the rear corner and the other at the entrance of the dormitory.

However, some students, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported seeing an unknown man wearing a dark jacket and a cap, carrying a small jerrycan and leaving the dormitory. They initially thought he was a teacher checking for students who had skipped prep, but shortly afterward, the dormitory caught fire.

This is not the first time the school has experienced a similar incident. On November 4, 2024, another boys’ dormitory was gutted by fire, destroying property worth millions of shillings.
