Police in Rukungiri have this morning intercepted a Bwindi Coaches bus due to overloading, which authorities say endangered passengers’ lives.

According to ASP Mbowamukama Abel, the Rukungiri District Traffic Officer, the bus, registration number UBB 598T, was traveling from Kampala to Kanungu when it was stopped following a tip-off from a concerned passenger.

ASP Mbowamukama noted that the vehicle was not only overloaded but was also operating with an expired Public Service Vehicle (PSV) license and third-party insurance.

“We are intensifying operations to combat road traffic violations, especially during this festive season when risks on the roads are higher,” he said.

A passenger who requested anonymity told our reporter that they had no choice but to board the overloaded bus, as many bus conductors tend to allocate seats based on receipts, leaving other passengers stranded if they opt for alternative transport.

By press time, both the bus driver and conductor, whose identities were not disclosed, were being held at Rukungiri Central Police Station as investigations continue.
