Police in Rubirizi District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the brutal murder of a 38-year-old man who was lynched by a mob on the evening of April 15, 2025.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 PM in Kyambogo Village, Rugazi Parish, Magambo Sub-county.
Greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson Marcial Tumusiime confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Lawrence Ashaba, also known as Araali, a peasant and resident of the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that Ashaba was suspected of stealing property belonging to one Robert Tumwesigye. The stolen items, including pangas and a television set, were reportedly recovered from Ashaba’s home.
According to eyewitnesses, upon the discovery of the stolen items, a mob descended on Ashaba and beat him severely. Police intervened at around 7:45 PM, rescuing him from the attackers and rushing him to Rugazi Health Centre IV. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Julius Muhanguzi, a 22-year-old boda-boda rider who reported the case to police, described the deceased as a well-known habitual thief who had long been under community suspicion.
Police have since launched investigations to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the mob justice incident.
