Police in Bushenyi District are searching for an unidentified woman who abandoned a one-year-old toddler in a pit latrine.

The incident occurred on June 20, 2024, around 5:00 PM on Kabirisi Road, Cell B, Town Ward, Ishaka Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.

According to reports, Novence Naturinda, a 40-year-old businesswoman and councilor for the Town Ward, informed the police that a young woman in her early 20s had approached residents at a building owned by ‘Hajji’ on Kabirisi Road, asking where she could use the restroom. The woman was holding a toddler at the time. Shortly afterward, she was seen without the child, only carrying the baby’s shoes.

Residents became suspicious and checked the latrine, where they heard the cries of a child. They raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors. Despite efforts by locals and the police to rescue the child, the toddler was found dead by the time they were able to remove him from the latrine.

Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that the police have initiated a manhunt for the suspect. He urged locals to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
