The Territorial Police in Kanungu have arrested two suspects, Ndyamuhakyi Abraham and Nabasa, in connection with a housebreaking incident and the theft of a motor vehicle battery, dry coffee beans, and a bag of clothes. The theft reportedly occurred on the afternoon of December 25, 2024, at the home of Tadeo Muhire in Nyanga village, Kihihi Sub-County, Kanungu District.

According to reports, the suspects allegedly broke into Muhire’s house while his family was away attending prayers. The complainant’s daughter, Ahabwayezu Hellen, informed the police that she had received a suspicious phone call from a former porter who had worked on their house. The caller inquired whether anyone was at home. Upon returning home, Hellen found a window open and several items missing, prompting her father to report the incident and request canine services.

Police investigations, aided by a sniffer dog, uncovered key evidence. The crime scene was well-preserved, allowing the dog to pick up a scent that led to the recovery of the stolen battery and a bag of clothes hidden behind a toilet approximately 1 km from the scene. The dog continued tracking for about 4 km, ultimately leading to the home of Byaruhanga, a pastor. The scent directed investigators to the room of his son, Ambu, who was playing football at the time. The dog then tracked further to a nearby grass-thatched house belonging to the two suspects. One suspect, who had made the suspicious call to Hellen, was present, while the other was found at the football pitch.

The suspects were arrested and are currently in police custody. Upon the completion of investigations, they will be arraigned in court to face charges.
