A group of youth supporters under the People’s Front For Freedom (PFF) staged a peaceful protest in Rukungiri Municipality on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, demanding the release of Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajj Abedi Lutale, who remain in detention under unclear circumstances.
The protest, which doubled as the launch of the “Grant Bail” campaign, saw participants march from the PFF offices along Rubabo Road, proceeding through Republic Road, Karegyesa Road, Godown Street, and returning to their starting point. The procession drew the attention of the public and local leaders who expressed concern over what they termed as the unjustified incarceration of the two political figures.
Boaz Kamusiime, Deputy Speaker of Rukungiri Municipal Council, clarified that the intention behind the demonstration was to pressure for the release of Dr. Besigye and Lutale, citing the lack of transparency surrounding their detention.
Other protesters, including youth leaders and supporters, echoed similar sentiments, calling on authorities, particularly President Yoweri Museveni, to intervene and secure their release ahead of their scheduled court appearance on 6th August 2025.
The protest was led and supported by Ingrid Turinawe Kamateneti, the founder of PFF and a renowned political activist, who praised the participants for their courage and urged continued peaceful activism until justice is served.
The PFF has vowed to maintain pressure through public demonstrations and legal avenues to secure the release of their leaders whom they regard as champions of freedom and democratic rights in Uganda.
