The Pango Uganda Limited is set to construct a 13.6 megawatts mini-hydropower dam along Birara –Mitano River which is estimated at 90 billion shillings which will address the challenge of power shed off in districts of Rukungiri and Kanungu and the neighboring districts.

This was revealed yesterday by Faith Asiimwe while officiating at the launch and groundbreaking of Mitaano hydropower dam on behalf of Pango Uganda Limited, a function that was held at Birara bridge in Nyakagyeme sub-county.

She commended the leaders of Rukungiri district especially Nyakagyeme and Rwerere where the project will do most of its work for cooperating with them, especially during the time of surveying where the local council chairperson did a great role.

Asiimwe revealed that the community will benefit much because the company is constructing a 12 km road from Birara to Mitaano bridge which will ease transport for farmers in the area especially to transport agricultural produce and provide jobs to the community members.

Frank Karezi the Rukungiri district deputy speaker asked the local leaders  to cooperate with the project officials for the project to become a success.

The Nyakagyeme sub-county chairperson Godson Mubangizi thanked the company for considering their area because people will get jobs from the project.

He asked people in the area to use this chance to get a market for their agricultural products, adding that people have been compensated mostly those whose land was affected.

Catherine Tumusiime the mayor of Rwerere town council cautioned women and girls to take care because the company will bring different people from different parts of the country.

He asked the company officials to consider giving jobs to the local community rather than ferrying from outside the district.

The project is constructing a road that will pass 12 villages that were assessed and the village chairperson accepted the project to start and it is to be completed in 3 years.

The project is estimated to be completed within a period of 3years.
