Edson Tumwetegyerize Binjonde, the Vice Chairperson of Nyarushanje Sub County, and Protazio Tumukunde, the former Speaker of Nyakyishenyi Sub County, along with other prominent FDC members, who were strong supporters and mobilizers for the FDC in Rubabo County, have defected from the FDC party.
They expressed their disillusionment with the party they had supported from the beginning, citing the confusion created by the party’s leadership.
Tumwetegyerize has declared his readiness to engage in mobilization efforts for the NRM party in Nyarushanje Sub County. He also intends to advocate for government programs in their sub county and hopes to bring more opposition members into the NRM party.
The new NRM party members were introduced to the Security Minister and Rujumbura County MP, Maj Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi, who serves as the NRM district chairperson. Mathias Rwabugumi, the Rukungiri district secretary for health and district councilor for Nyarushanje sub county, along with Anerst Ngabirano Katara, a senior administrator from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, coordinated this introduction.
Minister Muhwezi welcomed the former FDC members to the NRM, praising their decision to join the NRM as the right one. He characterized the NRM as the only genuine and pro-people political party in Uganda, committed to the country’s development and progress. He encouraged the new members to focus on improving their livelihoods by embracing opportunities for financial growth and participating in government development initiatives, rather than engaging in constant political activities.
Muhwezi also disclosed their ongoing efforts to mobilize support for the NRM party across the entire Rubabo County, with the aim of regaining it in the upcoming 2026 elections.
