Residents of Mabungo village in Nyabitete parish, Bugangari sub-county, Rukungiri district, find themselves in a dire situation as they care for five orphaned children left behind by the late Alex Mujuni, a soldier whose home was ravaged by heavy rainfall on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
Since the passing of Afande Alex in 2019, the children have been facing immense challenges, lacking necessities such as school fees and food. Robert Tumusiime, the LC 2 chairperson of Nyabitete parish, emphasized the children’s difficulties, including the absence of a restroom at home, inadequate food, and the inability to pay school fees. He implored authorities to intervene and assist in securing the well-being of these children.
Bridget Andiinda, 17, the eldest among the orphans, recounted her struggles since her father died in 2019. As the eldest sibling, she took on the responsibility of caring for her younger brothers and sisters, becoming the head of the household at a young age. She expressed discomfort with their current situation following the destruction of their home by the recent rainfall, appealing to compassionate individuals to come to their aid.
Furthermore, Andiinda lamented the lack of support from her late father’s pension, despite his years of service to the country. She revealed her efforts to pursue the matter, only to encounter obstacles such as the requirement of a national ID, which she lacked, and an unexpected fee of 80,000.
