The Territorial Police in Kanungu District are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred on 24th September 2025 at around 4:00 pm at Ibambiro junction along the Ishasha–Rukungiri road in Kanungu District.

According to police, the crash involved a white Toyota Hilux double cabin registration number UAW 240Z and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UFP 109R.

The motorcycle was being ridden by Tumukunde Elian, a 25-year-old resident of Rwerere, Kihihi Sub-County in Kanungu District, who died instantly at the scene.

“It is alleged that the rider of the motorcycle was coming from Kibimbiri heading to Kihihi along Kanungu road. As he was crossing the Ibambiro junction, he was knocked by the speeding Hilux which was coming from Ishasha heading to Rukungiri. The driver fled the scene and is still at large,” said ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police PRO.

Police visited, processed, and documented the scene. The deceased’s body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. The motorcycle was towed and parked at Kihihi Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Preliminary investigations point to reckless driving as the primary cause of the crash. A manhunt for the Hilux and its driver is ongoing.

ASP Maate assured the public that inquiries are underway and the suspect will be brought to book.
