In a vibrant display of community spirit and sportsmanship, Nyarushanje Sub-county defeated Boona FM FC 2-0 in a friendly football match held at the Nyarushanje Model Playground, Rukungiri District. But beyond the final score, the event was a celebration of unity, local talent, and the growing role of media in community development.
The match drew hundreds of enthusiastic fans who turned up to cheer for their teams, reflecting the strong local passion for football. Organised by Boona FM, the event is part of a broader initiative to promote grassroots sports and foster local pride.
Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo, aspiring Woman MP for Rukungiri District, graced the occasion and commended Boona FM for its continued efforts in empowering communities through such activities. She applauded the station for giving local talent a platform and pledged to boost sports development in the district if elected, citing sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment and community transformation.
“These kinds of events not only entertain but serve as a foundation for talent discovery and community growth,” Hon. Turyahikayo said. “Sports can be a key pillar in building a stronger, united district.”
Boona FM Station Manager Namanya Kakyene echoed the importance of using football and other sporting events to bring people together. He thanked the people of Nyarushanje for their warm support and promised more community-focused events in the future.
“Football is more than a game—it’s a bridge between people, a stage for young talents, and a way to bring communities together,” Kakyene said.
He also invited the public to attend the upcoming Boona FM 8th Anniversary celebrations, promising a vibrant lineup of activities including bicycle racing, wrestling matches, eating contests, and performances by both local and international artists.
