Authorities in Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district, are grappling with the persistent issue of domestic violence, which they argue is hindering development and exacerbating various challenges.

During a community policing meeting at Nyakishenyi sub-county headquarters, Mr. Wednesday Twinomujuni, the sub-county chairperson, expressed grave concerns about the prevalence of domestic violence cases, which threaten peace in the area.

Twinomujuni attributed the high incidence of domestic violence to the idleness of many household heads, noting that their failure to work and provide necessary resources often leads to violent incidents.

Furthermore, he criticized alcoholism as another significant cause of domestic violence, pointing out that many individuals have abandoned work and turned to alcohol, leading to financial mismanagement, poverty, and subsequently, domestic strife.

Twinomujuni raised alarms about the dangers of methanol, emphasizing its lethal effects and the problems it has caused within the sub-county. He urged the police to take decisive action by apprehending all methanol dealers and confiscating the harmful substance.

In response, Ahabwe Ronald, the community development officer for Nyakishenyi sub-county, highlighted additional societal challenges. He noted that gambling and alcoholism continue to be prevalent issues, contributing to social breakdown. Ronald also expressed concern over the high dropout rates in schools, particularly among girls, attributing this trend to parental neglect and financial hardship.

He urged parents to prioritize their children’s education by providing essential needs, thereby preventing school dropouts who resort to seeking income elsewhere.

Responding to these concerns, DPC Kyangungu emphasized the link between poverty and domestic violence, urging residents of Nyakishenyi to strive for economic empowerment. He condemned the practice of children forcefully demanding land from their parents, affirming parents’ rights to decide on land matters.

Kyangungu pledged to crack down on illicit methanol businesses masquerading as ethanol and warned about the deadly consequences of consuming poisonous alcohol, which he noted has led to fatalities in the area.

Overall, the authorities in Nyakishenyi sub-county are actively addressing these challenges through community engagement and law enforcement efforts to promote peace and development.
