Local leaders in Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje have expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents, with boda boda riders identified as the primary cause due to reckless riding. The increasing accidents have resulted in severe injuries, including permanent disabilities, and in some cases, fatalities.
Speaking to our reporter, Nyarushanje LC3 Chairperson Michael Musiime voiced his frustration over the daily surge in accidents, which have left many victims either disabled or dead. He warned boda boda riders against reckless riding, especially on the poor and rugged roads of Nyarushanje, urging them to ride responsibly to protect lives.
Musiime further noted that many boda boda riders operate without valid riding permits, indicating a lack of proper training. He urged them to enroll in driving schools to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge of road signs for safer riding.
Ibanda Parish Councillor Barnabas Biingi also raised concerns about the increasing accidents in the area, blaming the riders for their negligence. He criticized them for training fellow unqualified riders who lack driving permits, further worsening road safety.
He also condemned the practice of riding while intoxicated, which leads to preventable road mistakes. He urged boda boda riders to embrace professionalism and ride carefully to save lives.
Nyakishenyi Boda Boda Association Chairperson Charles Kaloori Atukunda acknowledged the issue, admitting that some riders display carelessness and overconfidence. However, he noted that new riders join the trade daily, often eager to showcase their riding skills without proper training.
