Juliet Akunda, the Senior Principal Nursing Officer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, issued a stern warning to nurses and midwives, who serve as the face of the hospital, cautioning them against engaging in extortion and the theft of government drugs for personal gain, emphasizing that such actions are not morally justified.

Akunda urged nurses and midwives to greet patients warmly and offer words of hope to reassure them that they are in capable and caring hands. This message was delivered during a celebratory gathering organized by the hospital’s nursing staff at Italiano Restaurant in Boma, Mbarara city.

She stressed the importance of healthcare professionals focusing on their primary responsibilities and urged them to convey to the community that they are dedicated to providing quality service.

Kyarisiima Judith, the General Secretary of the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union, expressed appreciation for the hard work of the nursing staff, acknowledging their dedication to patient care despite facing challenges such as shortages in health facilities. She highlighted the positive impact of their efforts in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Uganda.

Sharon Atuhaire, the Chairperson of Nurses and Midwives at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, called for teamwork and mutual support among colleagues both at the workplace and in personal lives to contribute to sustained economic development.
