Rukungiri District on Wednesday concluded Special Interest Groups elections in a free and fair exercise held at the district headquarters, with National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearers dominating most of the key positions.

Electoral Commission officials carefully tallied votes from all candidates before announcing the winners.

Among the notable results, Boona FM’s Head of Programs, Mr. Isaac Bernard Tushabe, who contested as an independent candidate for the workers’ representative seat, emerged victorious after securing 17 votes. His closest competitor, Kamara B. Jonathan, the NRM flag bearer, scored 16 votes, while the third candidate, independent Muhumuza Rubanzana Fred, garnered only 6 votes.

In other races, the district men’s PWDS council seat was won by Turyabagyenyi Emmanuel, who scored 56 votes, defeating independent candidate Oryoroba James, who received 21 votes. For the female PWDS council seat, NRM’s Asimwe Mollen emerged winner with 57 votes, defeating independent candidate Van Kenyangi Agenes, who secured 20 votes.

NRM also dominated the district women elders’ seat, with Komugisha Joan Kakwateki winning 74 votes against PFF’s Peninah Kobusigye, who received only 3 votes. In the councillor for older persons’ category, NRM’s Byaruhanga George Ruraka won with 52 votes, defeating independent candidate Babyengoma Eradio, who polled 26 votes.

The youth representative seats were also swept by NRM candidates. Ainebyoona Marion won the female youth councillor seat with 308 votes, beating PFF’s Asiimwe Viola, who got 126 votes, and independent Amutuhaire Dorothy, who secured 107 votes. The male youth councillor seat went to NRM’s Tuwesigye Harmony, who secured 332 votes, ahead of PFF’s Besigye Jordan with 120 votes and independent Agaba Innocent with 78 votes.

Following the results, Rukungiri District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Mr. Abbas K. Namara, commended the exercise, noting that it was conducted without any malpractice or irregularities. He assured voters of continued security, smooth transportation of election materials, and encouraged them to participate in the upcoming LC5 and district councilors’ elections scheduled for 22nd January.
