The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has emerged as the dominant political force in the newly elected local government councils across Rukungiri, Mitooma, Ntungamo, and Kanungu districts, following the recently concluded Local Government elections held between 20th and 22nd January 2026.
RUKUNGIRI DISTRICT
In the LC5 chairperson race, NRM flag bearer Andrewson Katebire Charles was elected Rukungiri District Chairperson after polling 40,946 votes (52.44%), defeating candidates from other political parties.

In Mitooma District, NRM flag bearer Karitundu Alex Okanga won the LC5 Chairperson seat with 42,001 votes.

NRM: 100% of elected district council positions
Others: 0 seats
NTUNGAMO DISTRICT
In Ntungamo District, NRM won 55 out of 64 council seats, with only 9 seats taken by Independent candidates.
The LC5 Chairperson race was won by Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba (NRM), securing a second term.
All Special Interest Group seats were won by NRM-leaning candidates. Independent candidates secured limited victories in areas such as Ihunga, Eastern Division, Central Division, Rukoni East, Kitwe TC, Nyakyera S/C, Rugarama North, Rubaare, Kayonza, and Rwentobo-Rwahi TC.
Ntungamo District Party Tally:
NRM: 55 seats
Independent: 9 seats

KANUNGU DISTRICT
Kanungu District elected a new team of councillors across sub-counties, town councils, and special interest groups.
Members of Parliament elected include Chris Baryomunsi (Kinkizi East) and James Ruugi Kaberuka (Kinkizi West).
A full list of directly elected councillors, women councillors, and special interest representatives was announced, including Kinshaba Patience Nkunda, Byamukama Francis, Rutazana Silver, Wagaba Richard, Ainembabazi Brosa Jimmy, Tukwasibwe Batista, Owokushaba Partson, Byaruhanga Bonny Christopher, Niwamanya Joram, Tumuranze Allon, Orishaba Elizabeth, Asiimwe Ruth, Ahimbisibwe Annet, Nahurira Mebel, Kyasiimire Mercy, among others.

The outcome of the 2026 Local Government elections clearly shows NRM’s continued dominance in southwestern Uganda, particularly at district and municipal council levels. The newly elected leaders have pledged to work with communities to improve service delivery, infrastructure development, health, education, and good governance as they begin their term of office.
