The Kabale District National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) Office has issued a warning regarding individuals posing as NIRA personnel and defrauding citizens seeking NIRA services.

Billy Basulwa, the Registrations Officer at the Kabale district NIRA Office, has cautioned the public ahead of the upcoming second phase of mass enrollment and renewal of National Identification Cards, set to begin on June 1 and run until September 30, 2025. Basulwa disclosed that they have apprehended five individuals who have been impersonating NIRA employees and extorting money from unsuspecting individuals. These impostors typically approach people in public areas or even within the office premises, falsely promising expedited services and special treatment.

Basulwa emphasized that NIRA services are provided free of charge and any necessary payments should be made directly to designated bank accounts. He clarified that his office consists of only three staff members and reiterated that NIRA services are exclusively available at authorized NIRA offices and designated registration centers.
