Nematode infestation in Ntungamo district has become a pressing concern for banana farmers, posing a significant threat to their plantations. The impact of these nematodes has resulted in substantial losses for farmers and raised apprehensions about potential food shortages in the future.

Saturday Mukasa Lanan, a resident of Runoni Cell in the central ward of Kitwe town council, emphasized the difficulties they face in securing adequate food, given that bananas have been a staple part of their diet. He also highlighted the severe decline in income experienced by farmers, as banana farming has traditionally been their primary source of livelihood.

Seith Ruzira, residing in Nyakyera town council, echoed similar concerns, noting the presence of the disease in certain areas of their town council and expressing fears about the looming threat of famine.

Ruzira further explained that unlike Banana Bacteria Wilt, which can be addressed by replacing affected suckers with new ones, this nematode-related disease presents a more complex challenge. Even with the introduction of new suckers, they tend to emerge weak due to the persistent presence of the nematodes.

Farmers have identified various symptoms indicative of the disease, including root loss, weakened plants, and eventual collapse of affected specimens. Ruzira emphasized the urgent need for agricultural officials to engage with banana farmers and educate them on effective strategies for managing this disease. He highlighted root-infecting nematodes and declining soil fertility as key factors limiting banana production in Ntungamo.

The Ntungamo district agriculture officer emphasized that root-infecting nematodes can result in a complete loss of yield, underscoring the urgent need for interventions. However, he noted the lack of sufficient information on integrated approaches for managing nematodes and enhancing soil fertility within smallholder farming communities.
