The police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 30-year-old man named Elias Bakamuzara, who worked as a bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) rider. He was a resident of Rutooma Ruganda in Rwamujura, Mayanga sub-county, Mitooma district.

The initial information comes from Ambrose Twemurikye, a 25-year-old Rwamuzura, Mitooma district saloon attendant. According to Ambrose, he and the deceased went to Rukungiri, arriving around 3:00 PM. While in Rukungiri town, Elias informed Ambrose that he wanted to check on his girlfriend but didn’t disclose her name or location.

They agreed that Ambrose would call Elias after his shopping was done. Ambrose made three phone calls, with the first call being answered by Elias, who promised to return.

However, on the second call, Elias did not pick up, and on the third call, his phone was turned off. This prompted Ambrose to hire another motorcycle to return to Mitooma, which he did, arriving at 6:00 PM. Upon his return to Mitooma, Ambrose informed residents and the owner of the motorcycle, Mwesigye Benard, about Elias’s disappearance.

With the help of a tracking device, the motorcycle was eventually located on October 18, 2023, at around 10:00 AM by Rukungiri Police. It was found in the possession of Turyatunga Moses, the area chairperson of Kigango Village in Ndago Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, who claimed to have received it from a resident named Kyarikunda Justina.

According to Justina, the motorcycle was brought to her home by her grandson, Kwikiriza Benson, along with another unidentified person on the morning of October 17, 2023. Given their sudden disappearance, she suspected the motorcycle might have been stolen or acquired unlawfully, so she handed it over to the authorities.

The recovered motorcycle was then taken to CPS Rukungiri with a reference number of SD 51/18/10/2023, and the police began inquiries into the disappearance of Elias, the rider. On October 23, 2023, at around 9:00 AM, in Kaitumura cell, Northern B ward, Eastern division, Rukungiri Municipality/district, a woman named Agatha Kenganzi discovered an unidentified body in the Kabanguha river while digging in her garden.

She immediately informed her husband, Kabigumira Obed, who then notified Mr. David Tumwesigye, the Mayor of the Eastern division. The Mayor, in turn, contacted the police at CPS Rukungiri to handle the situation. The crime scene was investigated, examined, and documented, and the body was retrieved.

It was then transported to Rwakabengo Health Center III for identification and a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Notably, a strong rope was found tied around the neck of the deceased, suggesting strangulation. The police are currently conducting inquiries into these events.
