Msgr. John Vianney Sunday, the Vicar General of Kabale Diocese cautioned newly confirmed members in Kabale District about the dangers of being influenced by emerging religious movements.

Speaking at Holy Family Buhara Catholic Parish in Buhara Sub-county, Ndorwa East County, on Tuesday, he confirmed 430 individuals into the Catholic faith, Msgr. Sunday was representing Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, the Bishop of Kabale Diocese. Bishop Rubaramira had traveled to represent His Grace Lambert Beinomugisha, the Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, at the funeral mass of Fr. Wycliffe Byamugisha. Fr. Byamugisha, who tragically died in a car accident at Kabagoma on the Ibanda-Mbarara highway, was only 36 years old and had served as a priest for six years.

In his homily, Msgr. Sunday stressed the significance of the sacraments of Baptism, confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, describing them as permanent and essential marks of the Catholic faith. He urged the confirmants to honor these sacraments and warned all believers to refrain from sin and criminal behavior, particularly violations of the fifth commandment, which prohibits murder and suicide.

He expressed deep concern over rising crime within the community, suggesting that some members were committing acts so grave they were “scandalizing even the devil.” He condemned witchcraft-related killings and cautioned against excessive alcohol consumption, calling it a form of self-destruction. Msgr. Sunday emphasized the difference between sins and crimes, explaining that “while all crimes are sins, not all sins are crimes.”

He also urged Christians to stay away from alcohol, linking it to domestic violence, school dropouts, and poverty in the region.
