Tragedy struck in Kihembe Sub County, Kanungu District, on the evening of January 21, 2025, when an alleged thief was brutally lynched by a mob. The incident occurred around 6:00 PM at Nyakasharara Cell in Kihembe Parish.
According to reports, the deceased, identified only as Joseph, a 35-year-old son of Kembabazi with no fixed address, reportedly trespassed into the home of Bajumwa Beatrice earlier in the afternoon. It is alleged that he stole UGX 300,000, prompting an alarm that attracted residents and army officers on guard duties in the area.
The suspect was apprehended and handed over to the Chairperson LC1 of Kihembe Central, Mr. Kazoba Frank. However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control when an angry mob overpowered the chairperson, forcefully taking custody of the suspect and lynching him. The mob went further, mutilating the body into pieces.
Police visited the scene, processed, and documented the crime. The body was transported to Kanungu Katate Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. Relevant statements have been obtained from key witnesses at the scene, but no arrests have been made yet.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the mob justice. ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, condemned the act, urging residents to report suspected criminals to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
This incident highlights the persistent challenge of mob justice in Uganda, raising concerns about the need for enhanced community sensitization and law enforcement in addressing such cases.
Police have appealed to the public to provide any information that may aid in identifying the suspects involved in the lynching.
