Sherere Village in Kagati Parish, Rwoburunga Sub-county in Mitooma district, is mourning the loss of Twinomucunguzi Perepetwa, a woman believed to be in her 50s, who passed away on February 11 under tragic circumstances.
According to Bampabwire Naboth, the LC 1 Chairperson of Sherere Village, Perepetwa had confined herself to her home after sending her children off to school. She reportedly covered herself with blankets, poured petrol over her body, and set herself on fire. Alarmed by sounds from the house, neighbors rushed in to find thick smoke and discovered Perepetwa severely burnt from her feet to her chest.
Emergency services were contacted immediately. LC 3 Chairperson of Rwoburunga Sub-county, Kansiime Alex, took swift action to ensure she received medical care. Perepetwa was first taken to Komboni Health Center and later referred to Ncwanga Hospital in Ishaka, Bushenyi, where she succumbed to her injuries before 4 PM.
Naboth disclosed that Perepetwa had been struggling with severe mental distress for about two years following the death of her husband, Mponoka Edison. He noted that the community had been concerned about her well-being, adding that this was not her first attempt to take her own life.
Perepetwa leaves behind six children, the youngest only seven years old. Plans have been made for her burial on Friday.
