The Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development on Wednesday launched the Safepal App, a web-based interactive platform and mobile application initiated for swift reporting of Gender-based violence cases in Rukungiri district.

Safepal was developed by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in 2020 with support from partners as an alternative to the available justice providers under Gender-based violence targeting young people as well as sharing information on HIV/AIDS, Reproductive health, Malaria, and Tuberculosis (TB).

In the Financial Year 2022/23, Rukungiri District registered 427 cases of Child neglect, 578 cases of Domestic Violence, 46 land disputes, and 11 child labor cases.

The Rukungiri District Community Development Officer Agaba Nemisius Posius welcomed the initiative noting that it will enhance awareness and intervention on Gender based violence among young people adding that cases have been increasing but few reported as a result of ignorance and lack of access to service providers.
The Assistant Commissioner on Child Affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Franco Tollea condemned the high rate of Gender-based violence cases according to the presented statistics and called on people to embrace this app to be able to report such cases quickly and easily to combat violence.

The Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom welcomed the initiative and urged Nongovernmental organizations to support the Parish Development Model program noting that it is the source of wealth yet violence is fueled by poverty.
