The Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Daina Nankunda Mutasigwa Kagyenyi, on Friday urged the youth in Mitooma District to actively utilize the government’s revolving fund for the betterment of their future.
Nankunda, while addressing the youth from Mitooma under their organization, Mitooma Young Generation Events, which aims to fight unemployment among the youth, spoke at a function held at the District headquarters in Mitooma Town Council.
“The government support is not enough. We need the youth to be hands-on because the world is moving at supersonic speed, and as leaders, we must emphasize job creators, not job seekers,” she said.
“As youth, you must be intentional about the future because every decision you make will have an impact. Change begins with a small step, and you have the opportunities and platforms to succeed.”
Ms. Juliet Bashaisha, the Mitooma Woman Member of Parliament, said they would address challenges affecting the youth, such as alcoholism and unemployment.
“People are criticizing the youth, saying they are unreliable, claiming they are being used by politicians without being given proper projects that can help them sustain themselves,” she said.
“Though the youth are the majority in Uganda, they are being left behind. We have moved around inspecting youth projects under Youth Livelihood and Emyooga, but many are not benefiting,” she added.
“The future belongs to the organized and disciplined, because some have used the youth as leaders for their own selfish interests. As we head into 2026, let’s not be used.”
Benon Karyeija, the Mitooma District Chairperson, noted that the district is facing several challenges, including corruption, sexual activity among the young, alcoholism, and the rise of Pentecostal churches, which have affected the district’s development.
“Life begins at conception, and as youth, you must use your time on earth to shape the future of the youth, community, and country at large,” said Mr. Karyeija.
Mr. Francis Kibuuka Amooti, the Resident District Commissioner of Mitooma District, said there are still challenges in leadership within Mitooma.
