In a show of support for girl child education, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, has bolstered Makiro Girls Vocational Secondary School with essential resources.
During a heartfelt thanksgiving ceremony, attended by a diverse congregation including Dr. Adrian Byomuhangyi, the parish priest of Makiro Parish, the Minister announced a donation of 10 computers and 2 million shillings towards the installation of equipment in the school laboratory and computer lab.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Byomuhangyi highlighted the pivotal role the school plays in uplifting girl children’s education in Kanungu district and its environs. He emphasized that before the school’s establishment, many girls would prematurely drop out of school due to various challenges. Makiro Girls Vocational Secondary School was founded to address these gaps, offering affordable education opportunities to empower young girls.
Dr. Byomuhangyi also urged parents to pay equal attention to their male children, noting a concerning trend where boys are being left behind despite the significant focus on empowering girls in Uganda.
Represented by Godfrey Karabenda, the Mayor of Kanungu Town Council, Minister Baryomunsi encouraged the female students to persevere in their studies, emphasizing discipline, hard work, and a reverence for moral values as pathways to success. He shared his journey from a medical doctor to a Member of Parliament and Minister, attributing his achievements to these principles.
Sister Biira Christin, the head teacher of Makiro Girls Vocational Secondary School, reassured the attendees that the institution prioritizes moral values and upholds high standards with God at the forefront of its educational mission.
The thanksgiving ceremony, which resonated with themes of education, morality, and empowerment, raised approximately 7 million shillings in funds and secured over ten additional computers for the school.
The generous support from Minister Baryomunsi and the community underscores the collective commitment to nurturing the next generation of empowered and morally upright leaders in Kanungu District.
