Two people have died and three others sustained critical injuries following a fatal road crash along the Kabale–Kisoro Highway in Rubanda District.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon at around 3:30 pm at Nyakiharo Village in Bubare Parish, Bubare Sub-county, involving a Toyota Corolla registration number UAJ 098V and a Howo truck registration number RAH 802Q/RL 6749.

The deceased were identified as 20-year-old Faith Kiconco, a resident of Kamuserwa Village in Rubanda Town Council, and Alex Namukujije, a 33-year-old Rwandan national.

The injured included the driver of the Toyota Corolla, Javira Mwesigwa, 33, a resident of Bugongi Upper in Kabale Municipality, together with two other unidentified male passengers who were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.

According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, preliminary investigations indicate that the Howo truck, which was travelling at a high speed, failed to negotiate a corner at Nyakiharo and rammed into the Toyota Corolla that was travelling in its proper lane from the opposite direction.

“It is alleged that both motor vehicles were moving in opposite directions when the driver of the Howo truck failed to properly negotiate a corner due to excessive speed and ended up ramming into the Toyota Corolla, killing two people on the spot and injuring others,” ASP Maate said.

Police visited and documented the scene before the injured victims were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Kabale Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The damaged Toyota Corolla was towed to Rubanda Police Station, while the truck remained at the scene pending offloading before being taken for inspection.

ASP Maate added that the driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene after the accident and is currently on the run as investigations continue.
