Christians from Christ the King Parish and the North Kigezi Diocese are set to begin their annual walking pilgrimage to Namugongo on May 17, 2026, as preparations for the journey gather momentum across the diocese.

According to the chairperson of pilgrims in North Kigezi Diocese, Mr. Ahibisibwe Jackson, about 180 Christians have already registered to take part in the foot pilgrimage. He said spiritual preparations, including prayers and church services, are already underway ahead of the long journey to the Uganda Martyrs Shrine.

Ahibisibwe explained that pilgrims from different archdeaconries within North Kigezi Diocese will converge at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, the diocesan headquarters, before setting off for Namugongo. He added that several stopover points have been identified along the route, including Rwashamire, Nyamunuka, and Karama, among others.

He further noted that most pilgrims cater for their own welfare during the journey, including meals, drinks, and other necessities, although some medical support is provided by the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt Rev Onesmus Asiimwe, alongside relief items donated by well-wishers.

The chairperson of Christ the King Church Rukungiri, Mr. Mucunguzi James, said their group will also begin the pilgrimage on Sunday, May 17, with about 40 pilgrims already registered to participate.

Mucunguzi noted that many Christians undertake the journey as an act of faith, seeking healing, spiritual renewal, and answers to personal prayers. He said the pilgrimage has over the years attracted testimonies from believers who claim to have received healing and transformation through the experience.

He added that the pilgrims also use the journey as an opportunity for evangelism, preaching to communities they meet along the way and offering counselling and guidance to people struggling with challenges such as drug abuse and prostitution.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of Nyakibale Parish pilgrims, Mr. Byamugisha David, identified swelling of legs, body pain, cardiovascular complications, and limited access to water as some of the major challenges faced during the long trek.

The Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo has in recent years grown into a renowned international pilgrimage destination, attracting thousands of believers from across the world during the annual Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. This year’s celebrations will be led by the Kasese Diocese.
