In a bid to propel Uganda’s digital and socio-economic advancement, the Honorable Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, inaugurated a pivotal two-day workshop centered on data sharing.

Hosted by the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U), in collaboration with the Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL), an affiliate of the United Nations, the event unfolds under the theme “Trusted Data Exchange as a Foundation for Digital and Socio-economic Transformation – Experiences & Opportunities of Ug Hub.”

The workshop, held at the esteemed Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala, convenes stakeholders from various sectors to delve into the intricacies of data sharing, encompassing lessons learned, encountered challenges, and the blueprint for widespread implementation across governmental bodies. This gathering comes on the heels of the 2021 rollout of the Data Integration Platform, known as UgHub, by NITA-U. This innovative initiative was crafted to facilitate secure data exchange among governmental entities and strategic private partners, marking a pivotal stride toward enhancing operational efficiency and service delivery.

Since its inception, UgHub has witnessed remarkable traction, with over 100 entities currently interconnected on the platform, facilitating upwards of half a million transactions each month. NITA-U, operating under the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, underscores the platform’s instrumental role in expediting service provision, slashing turnaround times, curbing costs, and bolstering data integrity and adherence to legal frameworks.

The workshop underscores the critical importance of fostering a culture of data collaboration and trust, essential for steering Uganda towards a digitally-driven future. By harnessing the power of data sharing, stakeholders anticipate unlocking unprecedented opportunities for societal progress and economic prosperity, positioning Uganda as a trailblazer in the realm of digital transformation.

As delegates engage in robust discussions and knowledge exchange during the two-day workshop, the outcomes are poised to catalyze tangible advancements in Uganda’s digital infrastructure and governance frameworks. By addressing pertinent challenges and charting a comprehensive rollout strategy, the nation stands poised to harness the full potential of data sharing, thereby ushering in a new era of inclusive development and innovation.

With the Minister’s official inauguration setting the stage for intensive deliberations, the workshop signals a collective commitment towards harnessing data as a catalyst for positive change. As Uganda charts its course toward digital and socio-economic transformation, the principles of trust, collaboration, and innovation emerge as guiding beacons, propelling the nation toward a prosperous and sustainable future.
