Milton Kamusiime, commonly known as Hajji, has been declared the new Chairperson of the Rukungiri District Taxi Operators and Drivers Cooperative Society.
He was declared on Wednesday evening by the Rukungiri Municipality Principal Commercial Officer, Grace Tayebwa.
The election took place at All Saints Church in Rukungiri’s Southern Division and was supposed to involve 323 members, but only 189 turned up to vote.
Kamusiime received 120 votes, defeating his main opponent, Happy Buhamizo, who garnered 60 votes. Benon Okubiriba received 7 votes, and there were 2 invalid ballots. Kamusiime replaces Silage Kabwende, who led the society for six years. The Rukungiri Municipality Commercial Officer directed the new and outgoing leadership to prepare for the handover ceremony within one week.
Elias Kangume was elected Vice Chairperson with 109 votes, defeating Hebert Biryinja, who got 80 votes. Other committee members, including Robert Muhwezi, Benard Muramira, Darius Niwahereza, Hassan Gumisiriza, and Keneth Asiimwe, were unopposed.
The secret ballot election was presided over by Benard Tumwesigye Lutaya, the Chairperson of the Vetting Committee, along with his committee members and assisted by Mr. Pere Owoyesigire, the Senior Commercial Officer of Rukungiri Municipality.
Grace Tayebwa, the Rukungiri Municipality Principal Commercial Officer, thanked the Vetting Committee for organizing free and fair elections. She urged the members to cooperate with the new leadership, emphasizing good accountability and basic leadership skills to develop the SACCO.
The Rukungiri District Police Commander, SSP Musa Tiakyirana, and the OC Traffic Rukungiri District, Able Nowamukama, asked the taxi operators to collaborate with the police to reduce crime in the transport sector. They also congratulated the new leadership.
Milton Kamusiime thanked all SACCO members who participated in the voting process and pledged to work cooperatively with everyone for the development of their SACCO.
