Traders in Kanungu Town Council can look forward to improved business conditions as Mayor Godfrey Karabenda has reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to fast-tracking infrastructure development and addressing challenges facing the business community.
In response to concerns raised by traders regarding zoning changes, high taxation, and poor infrastructure, Mayor Karabenda called for patience and unity, assuring the public that significant development projects are already in progress. He noted that these efforts are part of a broader vision to upgrade Kanungu Town Council into a municipality, a move expected to bring even more services and growth opportunities to the area.
The Mayor made the remarks following grievances from some traders who were recently relocated to newly designated areas under the council’s urban zoning plan. While they acknowledged the need for town organization, the traders expressed concerns about declining customer numbers, poor road conditions, lack of electricity, and increased operating costs—particularly from trading license fees.
Pastor Joab Kichoncho, Chairperson of the Kanungu Traders Association, emphasized the importance of inclusive and well-communicated urban planning. He acknowledged the benefits of zoning but noted that its rushed implementation left many businesses unprepared. He called for better infrastructure, lower taxes, and clearer communication to ease the transition and boost business stability.
In his response, Mayor Karabenda outlined a series of developments aimed at revitalizing the town’s commercial environment:
- Tarmacking of Kanungu–Kabale and Rugyeyo–Kisiizi roads is set to begin within the current financial year, which will ease transportation and reduce costs for traders, especially those dealing in perishable goods.
- On electricity, the Mayor revealed plans to extend power supply to underserved trading areas. In the meantime, the town council will donate solar lights to improve security and lighting in affected areas.
- He further assured residents that the government is actively supporting the town’s development agenda, and pledged to work closely with relevant ministries to ensure a smooth upgrade of Kanungu Town Council to a municipality.
“We are aware of the challenges our traders are facing, and we are not sitting back. The development plans are real, and we urge our people to remain calm and supportive as we work toward a brighter, more organized and economically vibrant Kanungu,” said Mayor Karabenda.
As Kanungu Town Council prepares for its next chapter, the leadership’s promises have sparked renewed hope among local traders and residents alike—paving the way for sustainable growth and prosperity.
