In a surprise shakeup within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Lt. (Rtd.) Moses Mushabe has defeated long-serving Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Jim Muhwezi to take over the leadership of the NRM Veterans League.

Mushabe, who also chairs the NRM in Isingiro District, secured 1047 votes against Gen. Muhwezi’s 570, a commanding 477-vote margin that underscored strong grassroots support for his message of reform.

The outcome signals a generational transition in the veterans’ leadership, with Mushabe promising to put issues of health, livelihood, and social welfare of ex-service men and women at the center of his agenda. He accused past leadership of neglecting the very people who sacrificed for the country, pointing to unfulfilled government pledges and widespread poverty among veterans.

The victory also cements Mushabe’s rising political profile. In Isingiro, he swept into office as NRM district chairman with an overwhelming 89% of the vote. His latest triumph elevates him as a fresh face within the NRM hierarchy, at a time when the party faces mounting pressure to balance loyalty to its founding figures with the demands of a younger, more impatient base.
