There was a low turnout of both pupils and teachers at Rukungiri Primary School today, the official opening day of third term. A visit by Boona FM revealed that only 151 learners reported for class out of the expected 340, and no UNATU (Uganda National Teachers’ Union) teachers were present.

The school’s head teacher, Mr. Silagi, expressed disappointment over the situation, saying that the absence of teachers and the low number of pupils could affect the smooth start of the term. He attributed the teachers’ absence to the ongoing sit-down strike by UNATU members protesting the government’s failure to increase salaries for Arts teachers.

“Even if learners are few, they deserve to be taught in time and as required, especially since this is the final term of the year,” Mr. Silagi told Boona FM. He appealed to the government to urgently negotiate with UNATU teachers so that they can resume duties and ensure learners are not disadvantaged.

Mr. Silagi further revealed that the school has hired two private teachers to teach, supervise, and maintain discipline among the pupils as they await a positive response from the government. He also called on parents to send their children back to school to avoid wasting valuable study time.
