Rukungiri Municipality has officially elected a new Municipal Council to serve for the 2026–2031 term, following a competitive electoral process that saw candidates from different political parties battle for leadership positions across the municipality.
The mayoral race was won by NRM’s Kansiime Boaz Matiita, who secured 5,759 votes, defeating PFF’s Mr. Ngabirano Denis, who garnered 5,126 votes, and JEEMA’s Mr. Barikudembe Otiko, who received 88 votes.
Western Division Results
In the Western Division, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) made significant gains:
Innocent Rubarondesa (PFF) won the Kinyansano Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Kijukuru Viane John (PFF) secured the Kitimba Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Turyahabwe Bernard (PFF) was elected Northern A Ward Municipal Councillor.
Atukwase Nice Mwebesa (PFF) won the Woman Councillor seat representing Kinyansano and Northern A Wards.
Meanwhile, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) also registered victories:
Mark Sulait(NRM) secured the Kitimba Woman Councillor seat.
Kyarisiima Moreen (NRM) won the Kalangaro Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Karuhura Enock (NRM) secured the Karangaro Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Eastern Division Results
In the Eastern Division, NRM dominated several wards:
Besigye Fred (NRM) won the Northern B Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Mr. Muhwezi Innocent (NRM) secured the Kagashe Municipal Councillor seat.
Tumuhirwe Consiranta (NRM) was elected Kagashe Municipal Woman Councillor.
Mr. Maurice (NRM) won the Rwentonto Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Naturinda Mariam (NRM) secured the Rwentondo Ward Woman Councillor seat.
PFF also posted wins in the division:
Bamanyisa Christopher (PFF) was directly elected Municipal Councillor representing Kyatoko Ward.
Mrs. Ariho Judith (PFF) won the Municipal Woman Councillor seat representing Kyatoko and Northern B Wards.
Southern Division Results
In the Southern Division, PFF emerged strong in several wards:
Tumuhimbise Gaudy (PFF) secured the Woman Councillor seat representing Rwakabengo Ward.
Morning Johnson (PFF) won the Ndorero Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Turyamubugana Gideon (PFF) secured the Kanyinya Ward Municipal Councillor seat.
Tumusiime Constance (NRM) won the Kanyinya Ward Woman Councilor seat.
Levi Akatukunda (PFF) was directly elected Municipal Councillor representing Rwakabengo Ward.
NRM also registered victories:
Baryazimwa Abraham (NRM) won the Kigaaga Ward Municipal Councilor seat.
Esther Rwamunahe (NRM) secured the Kigaaga Ward Woman Councilor seat.
Youth Representatives:
Boaz Kamusiime (PFF) was elected Male Youth Councillor for Rukungiri Municipality.
Atukunda Anita (PFF) secured the Female Youth Councillor seat.
Elderly Representatives:
Begumisa Frank (NRM) won the Male Elderly Councillor seat.
Kamabate Lovence (NRM) secured the Female Elderly Councillor seat.
Persons with Disabilities (PWDs):
Karuhura Tananzio (NRM) was elected Male Councillor representing Persons with Disabilities.
Tusiime Silvia (NRM) secured the Female Councillor seat representing Persons with Disabilities.
The newly elected council is expected to be sworn in soon and will be responsible for steering development, service delivery, and governance in Rukungiri Municipality over the next five years.
