The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Mbarara has remanded Doreen Atwongyirwe, a 39-year-old lecturer at Bishop Stuart University in Kakoba, Mbarara, until October 15, 2024, on charges of grievous harm.

The court explained that Atwongyirwe will formally enter a plea before the Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Atwongyirwe, a resident of Katete Central Cell, is facing charges under Section 199(a) of the Penal Code Act for allegedly causing grievous harm by pouring hot water with intent to kill Anita Kansiima, who was working as her housemaid.

Presiding over the case, Grade One Magistrate Esther Bagala noted that the charges fall under the jurisdiction of the Chief Magistrate’s Court, making it necessary for Atwongyirwe to be officially charged and have her plea taken there.

According to the prosecution, Atwongyirwe allegedly caused grievous harm to Kansiima on September 25, 2024, in Katete Central Cell, Mbarara City South Division. The incident, reportedly intended to disable Kansiima, is the basis of the charges.

Atwongyirwe did not enter a plea during her appearance in court, as she is scheduled to do so before the Chief Magistrate on October 15, 2024.
