The rampant cases of theft in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, have raised concern among leaders due to the increased consumption of drugs.
The Buyanja Sub County LCIII Chairperson, Agaba Emmy Rubodo, attributed the high cases of theft to the high poverty levels among the people in the sub-county, who resort to stealing as an alternative source of survival.
He says records show that most cases involve housebreaking, theft of domestic animals and food, as well as snatching personal property from night dwellers.
Rubodo stated that several youths are redundant, which forces them to resort to crime for survival. He called on parents to take responsibility for safeguarding their children from drug abuse.
He warned that the rising cases of theft could trigger incidents of mob justice due to increasing frustration among the people.
Rubodo blamed the rise in criminal activities on both the youth and elderly individuals who spend most of their time gambling, taking drugs, and drinking alcohol instead of working to earn a living. He appealed to area security teams to step up patrols and report suspicious cases.
He urged the youth to invest in income-generating projects so they can earn a living instead of engaging in drugs, theft, and gambling.
