The Chairperson of LC5 Rukungiri District, Geoffrey Kyomukama, has urged farmers who were evicted from wetlands to adhere to the prescribed guidelines for proper usage and compensation.
He made the appeal on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025, during the councilors’ monitoring of the progress at the Rushaya River Wetland in Bwambara and Kakindo Wetland in Bugangari Restoration Centers.
Kyomukama acknowledged the importance of wetlands for storing and filtering water and cleansing the environment, noting that wetlands remain useful for agriculture, such as fish, goat, sheep, and bee rearing, among others. He urged farmers to cooperate with the wetland restoration advisory team for the successful implementation of the activity.
Micheal Byarugaba, the Rukungiri District Secretary for Production, Works, and Natural Resources, reiterated the consolidated boundary demarcation between the farmers and the restoration advisory team and the partial compensation of groundnut seedlings to farmers along Rushaya River Wetland.
Caroline Mbabazi, the District Natural Resources Officer, urged for cooperation between farmers and the restoration advisory team, clarifying the compensation of farmers along Kakindo Wetland and the expectations for compensation of farmers along Rushaya River Wetland in the ongoing financial year.
Magezi Salvani, a farmer along Rushaya River Wetland, urged for unity between farmers and the restoration advisory team for the successful implementation of the activity.
