NTUNGAMO– Residents of Kyitojo Parish in Bwongyera Subcounty, Ntungamo District decry the problem of water scarcity in their area.

It is reported that they always use water from Kahengye River, which they say is not good for their health, saying they have only one tap in Gayomba Cell.

Speaking to the Chairperson LC1 Gayomba Cell, Francis Bamanyire, they have no water sources in their area but were only helped by Human Integrated Project, which provided a few taps in the area but didn’t reach a big population, saying they collect water from wells.

He further showed how there’s need for at least a borehole in their area, saying about three cells use only one tap, which is also a distance away from their homes.

Daniel Bamusime, a resident of the same, said they’re very bad off as residents using unclean water, saying they have no spring waters (emigano) in their area, saying during the rainy season, the water they use from wells gets dirty by the floods, which he says is not recommended for their health.

He further said they tried reaching out to those responsible but nothing has been done as of yet, calling for government intervention.

Loyce Muhimbise, a resident of Gayomba Cell as well, confirmed that they have always used water from the well, saying they have not even a borehole in their area, explaining that they have only one tap used by about three to four cells.

She further said that people use water from Kahengye River, which she says people bathe from, which she says puts their lives at risk.

However, speaking to the Chairperson LC3 Bwongyera Subcounty, Isaac Kakurumba said they are sure about the problem in Bwongyera at large and said they’re in plans of constructing water springs (emigano) and boreholes in different cells, and Gayomba Cell will be one of the beneficiaries.
